Multimeter Frequently Asked Questions
Why calibrate a multimeter?
How often should I calibrate a multimeter?
Initially, it is recommended you follow the OEM recommended calibration interval. If you do mostly critical measurements and do them often, a shorter time span between calibrations means less chance of questionable test results. Many times, calibrating at shorter intervals will afford you with better specifications.
Why types of errors are present in a non-calibrated multimeter?
Drift errors caused by time, environment, and physical use (or abuses). Regular calibration will help keep your instrument error-free.
Can I calibrate my own multimeter?
Do-it-yourself calibration is not recommended when intending to stay true, with minimum measurement uncertainty, to manufacturer specifications, especially when there is a requirement for the calibration to be traceable to the International System of Units (SI).
